The Journey to Immortality. The road to ultramarathoner

POST 1(06-09-18): On 5th September 2018 my life changed.

If you’ve read my other blogs you’ll see that I’m a fairly recent convert to running, however I’m committed and I think I’m doing alright. I’ve really taken an affinity for longer runs and love being off road. Living near the Oxfordshire Ridgeway lends itself to some fabulous running scenery. Challenging too!!

So what happened on the 5th September 2018 Nick? I hear you all shout.

Well, it’s a funny story.

Having loved long Ridgeway runs, up to 30Km by this point, I had for a few months thought that running the Race To The Stones ultra would be an amazing challenge. Not sure it’s a sane challenge but certainly a challenge. So on the 5th September 2018 I signed up to do the full 100Km, straight through. That’s 24 Hr to complete the 100Km route without a significant break and certainly no overnight snoozing!

Am I mad?

Has anyone found my marbles?

Whatever way you look at it things just got serious.

Can I do it? – yes. I feel I can, but equally it won’t stop me worrying about it until the race has started.

Will I be able to train for that sort of race? – Better question – Being honest I don’t know what that training looks like. One for the next blog. But I’m assuming some pretty sizeable long runs, maybe doubling long runs in the same day to simulate distance running on knackered legs, who knows? I suspect there’s a lot of training miles between now and July.

I plan to keep a training, race and recovery blog here at least once a month.

Would be great for other to give some feedback and advice if you have any. Feel free to leave a comment on the page!
